Background
Mr R W had a hospital admission earlier this year from his home. He has a diagnosis of Dementia and presented following a Fall and delirium.
Unfortunately, he did not improve and after assessment was transferred to a Long Term placement Dementia Nursing bed as he was immobile at the time. His night time behaviours were also getting demonstrably worse and family felt that they would be unable to support him at home with the behaviours he was demonstrating. However, they soon understood the Mr W was extremely unhappy at the home and felt that they should at least try to support him to return.
Intervention
In April 25 following a 56 day review Kyndi jointly assessed with the Medway Care Review Team. After discussion with the family they expressed their wishes to bring Mr W back to his Daughter’s property but also their reservations around his behaviours including calling out at night, Falls and Night Time wandering.
The Bulb was suggested and installed ready for Mr W’s return Within a period of less than 3 weeks the behaviours began to settle and the pressure on his family as Carer’s began to reduce significantly. Mr W continues to cope well back in a family environment with minimal Care Support.
1. Quality of Life
- Independence: The Bulb’s Light Rhythms have proved to have combatted Mr W’s behaviours so as to enable him to move to an environment which is the least restictive for him and promotes his independence in a family environment.
- Mental Health: Improved mental well-being, due to being able to move out of a Care setting.
- Daily Routine: The bulb has helped reduce Mr W’s night time behaviours enabling him to be more rested during the daytime and to therefore be able to take part in social activities
2. Economic Impact
Medway
- Pre-intervention (2025): £945 per week – Nursing Dementia Bed
- Post-intervention (2025): £240 per week – 24 units of care per week
Cost of Assistive Technology
- Circadacare System: £520 per year
- Net Savings: £36140 – (£945 X 52 = £49140 – £240x 52 = £12480) – £520.00
£36140 savings per year
3. Social Impact
Mr W is rested enough to take part in Social activities
and family are able to Care without a large impact upon their lives
The Joint assessment with the Medway Review team and Kyndi has enabled Mr W to return to be cared for by his family as he and they wished and where he continues to be safe and happy
This coupled with the Cost Savings demonstrate how technology can be used when implemented alongside a timely assessment.
Conclusion
The introduction of the Smart Bulb system has proved a significant intervention and has shown substantial benefits for Mr W both in terms of Social outcomes and economic savings. The calming nature of the bulb continues to support Mr W and his family and enable Mr W to be cared for in the least restrictive fashion and more importantly live safely in a place where he wishes to reside.
